May 1st, 2007 was a bit windy in Tiszakecske, but this did not deter the celebration-ready crowd from enjoying
family fun and merriment. Adventurous adults enrolled in the
cooking contest, while the kids participated in
bike races,
soccer, and
trivia games.
Keeping with established tradition, the
local art groups entertained the guests with dazzling performances.
Competition dancers,
folk dance groups, and
modern dance performers took center stage one after the other, and the local
zither band enchanted the audience with a concert/jam session that was indeed music to the ears.
Nevertheless, the crowning event of the day still remained the
setting up of the Maypole. With the help of the dancers of the Kecske Folk Dance Group, girls and women decorated the city's Maypole with long ribbons, and then fit young men raised it into position.
Traditionally, the
Maypole stands in its place till Pentecost (Whit Sunday), when this
symbol of renewal and love is „danced out”. On this particular May Day, however, the members of the folk dance group decided that it wouldn't be fair to visitors who won't be around on Whit Sunday to miss all the fun, so they invited the whole crowd to join the dance right there and then.
