Used as a barn by the troops of the Emperor of Austria during the Rákóczi war of independence (1703 - 1711), the building burnt down in 1719. It was rebuilt, but in 1907 its onion-shaped steeple was badly damaged in a fierce storm. Architects then decided to give the tower the final, bastion-shaped form, and it is since then that the building is called the 'Frustum' church.



The Csonka templom, 'Frustum' church is located on Piac utca (Market Street) in Debrecen, where an old wooden building, first called Small Church used to stand.


Used as a barn by the troops of the Emperor of Austria during the Rákóczi war of independence (1703 - 1711), the building burnt down in 1719. Soon after this catastrophe, thanks to a generous donation from András Báthory Szabó from Debrecen, a new, stone church was erected -- large enough to hold 1600 people -- which unfortunately also fared like its predecessors and was partially consumed in another fire in 1727.
