The Common Spoonbill nests in colonies in trees or reedbeds of tranquil marshy wetlands. A wading bird, it feeds on various fish, frogs and other water creatures it “spoons out” from the shallow waters. Its Hungarian name,
kanalasgem (
gem = heron) might suggest that it is a type of heron, but it belongs to the ibis family, and it does not usually share colonies with storks or herons.
It regularly breeds in Hungary; and it raises its chicks between the months of April and June. It is a migratory bird.
Strictly protected.
