One of the most prominent buildings of Kecskemet Main Square, the Ornamented Palace (
Cifra Palota) was designed by Geza Markus in Art Nouveau (Secession) style. It was originally intended to be a town house, with stores on the ground floor, and apartments and the Merchants' Casino, upstairs.
Today it houses the paintings of the Kecskemet Gallery, a valuable collection of 19th and 20th century art.
The roof tiles and Pyrogranite ornaments of the Ornamented Palace were
designed and made by the renowned Zsolnay factory, and its green windows are immortalized in a Hungarian children's song, in which one flower serenades the other, to convince her to come outside:
Cifra palota, zöld az ablaka,
Gyere ki, te tubarózsa, vár a viola.
